I know I'm delving deep with these last photos, going from the serene calm of the beach to matters of life and more along the lines of happiness and the sorts. I played with light bulbs today, trying to get a slow-mo shattered glass effect but boy, they sure make'em tough to crack. and when i did manage it, it usually was either unspectacular or blurry :( it's tough but i did get some interesting human touch photos which i will share with you during the next 2-3 days...
Anyway, the point of this image is a hand holding a dying light bulb. Like a swan, it gives its last bright spark, before fading into nothingness. Makes you think about the things that you do and why you do them.
Tell me if it inspires you, and tell me what i did wrong with it... Thanks for all you criticism coined and to all the comments i've received from everyone else.
And remember, just that little comment makes me a happy, daily posting, photographer.

Good composition and well done to get the smoke on it in that way.!

@ColNed Pictures: Well, I had an assistant which made it a lot easier. And then I had some knowledge from my previous experiments as to about how much a dying bulb should be exposed (and still came out with two duds).
thanks for the comment and the visit mate :)
PS: here's your thirds too :)
in my opinion there is nothing wrong with the photograph :) composition is good and the exposure is perfect too. i liked the thought u have behind the shot.

@siddharth: thank you :)
i did cheat a bit on the exposure since i shot raw and then lowered the exposure with about 1EV since it was just a little burnt out. and i do like to think my shots. hopefully you'll like tomorrow as well :)
Very interesting! Excellent experiment!

@Sriram: Thanks, glad you like it :)
Like the photograph, brah! The fact that you are experimenting in itself is inspiring...sorry about not being able to come by sooner and comment...heard about TED and its exclusivity to be invited to one of their conferences. Amazing idea in intself, these "brain spa conferences."
By the way, my post today is dedicated to you for inspiring/reminding me to post another angle on my "Two Shall Become One" series. Thanks, brah! Cheers...

@{H} creatives: thanks dude :) I love experimenting, mainly with fire, water and slow-motion, but it's tough by yourself. But it sure is a lot of fun. And very rewarding when one really works :) I believe this is the true creativity in photography, but then again so is spotting the wonderful out of the common. It's ok dude, your comments are welcome anytime, you're a regular by now :)
and TED yeah, it's a real treasure, i just love watching them, it's just like Discovery was back in the day... back before it just became a car channel (not that i mind :D). they're real eye-openers and i especially like the 2004 (i think) conferences where the theme was "the pursuit of happiness". everyone should watch those, i feel there is much to learn.
Hey, I'm glad you didn't get annoyed about me suggesting it :) i'll definately check it out but tomorrow, there's no energy in me right now...
cheers :)
I love it.

@Shuva Brata Deb: Makes me so happy :)
Superb composition! Congrats, you are on the spotlight page.

@badala: Thanks, and yey :) Just saw that (actually I just received an sms from a friend telling me that :)
Interesting photo, I think the idea is perfectly clear, great concept behind the photo and well executed. Great photo and congratulations, your photo is currently featured on the aminus3 spotlight!

@Alfredo J. Martiz J.: Thanks a lot, I did try a bit to get it right, and it was backed up by quite a lot of editing (especially in RAW developing). I'm glad you see the photo like I do and that my work is being appreciated. However if there's anything bad with it, please let me know, i'm really ok with criticism :)
uu .. nice .. this is much better than the last shot this type u made :P but i can't define a hand in there, looks more like a pullover :P indeed u are killing the bulb :( wow .. u are starting to become famous :P
5 Jul 2007 6:29am
@zoloper: thanks furry :P and yeah, it;s pretty much just a finger and not a hand, which is why i felt it needed a bit of explaining.
and the bulb was actually dead from the slow-mo trials but the filament and socket were still intact so why not :)
and come on, stop flattering me mate, i wish :)
eye-catching photo! amazing idea and thoughts behind

@ttomasso: all these comments are really making me so happy :) and i'm glad people really understand the underlying concept :)
great conceptual shot. this one came out great

@Nick Passantino: thanks nick, glad you like it, and thanks for another visit :)
Let me tell you... this is one of the best shots taken i ever see. Absolutely perfect!

@Mahyar: Thank you mahyar, it really means a lot hearing that :)
A funny reply now would be "be sure to buy a print" :))
again, thanks for the visit and comment :)
Very creative shot. And I guess a lot of work went into it. I would love to try it sometime :). But one thing I didn't like is the blurred smoke. But even otherwise a great shot.
6 Jul 2007 8:04am
@Madhavi: Yeah, it was pretty tough. Especially because every shot you had to destroy a light bulb. And more so since there was only one which worked... :( And you really should. If you want to, drop me an email and I'll reply to you the know-how :)
As for the smoke, it's the tricky part. You see when the filament burns it's a violent reaction hence the smoke moves really fast. Add the fact that it moves in 3D (more planes, it winds and curves) and that the exposure is just 1/80 (anything less is over, anything more is under-exposed). And even if that wasn't enough i had a 500W bulb on the smoke to get it exposed right. and still there was blur. so i'm sure it can be improved, but it's a hell of a task...
and again thanks, and you know i'm glad you like it :)
Your experimentation paid off. I love the idea, the technique and the motivation and discussion. Nice one Eyd.

@Jason Kravitz: Thanks a lot Jason, I feel like I owe you one for this :) And therefore I'm gonna start shooting something strange right now and maybe you'll like it. Apparently since I'm not leaving today after all I'll drop you an email when I'm done.
Again thanks Jason, and as always thanks for the visit and the time to comment :)
